Integration Among Different Domains – Applying DSM to Functional Test Machines for Electronic PCBAs
Welcome to the 2026 Industry Sprint Workshop (ISW) at the International DSM Conference. ISW have a year-long tradition at DSM conferences, and we are happy to continue this format.
The Industry Sprint Workshop offers participants the opportunity to work in multidisciplinary teams on real engineering challenges provided by ABB. This year’s case focuses on the development and optimization of Functional Test Machines (FTMs) for electronic Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs).
Participants will use Design Structure Matrix (DSM) methods together with Systems Engineering approaches to analyze complex product architectures, development processes, and organizational dependencies while proposing practical improvements for an industrial application.
The workshop begins with a 30-minute introduction to the industrial challenge presented by ABB. Participants are then divided into multidisciplinary teams and work independently on the case, applying Design Structure Matrix (DSM) and complementary Systems Engineering methods to analyze the problem from three perspectives: product architecture, development processes, and organizational structure. Working independently without facilitators, each team will develop insights for each DSM view and integrate them into a coherent improvement proposal. The workshop concludes with short presentations in which teams pitch the core idea that would convince ABB to adopt their solution, highlighting the integration of the different DSM perspectives, their unique value proposition, and the key lessons learned about DSM. Besides solving a realistic industrial problem, participants will enjoy a collaborative, team-building environment while competing for a small award.
The workshop concludes with presentations, discussion, and a small award for the most convincing solution.
